Bernard J. Hynes, CEBS
Bernie Hynes is a principal of Hynes Benefits Consulting, LLC. He brings more than 30 years of experience in designing, optimizing, implementing and managing employee benefits programs to the company, with proven expertise in strategic planning, plan analysis, benefits administration and marketing, renewal analysis and contract negotiations with carriers and vendors.
Bernie joined Hynes Benefits Consulting in January 2007 after an outstanding career as a consultant and senior executive at some of the industry’s largest and most prestigious consulting firms. Prior to joining HBC, he served for eleven years as a principal and health & welfare consultant at the Phoenix office of Buck Consultants, where he managed such prestigious Arizona accounts as BHP Copper, Tosco, The Scotts Company, PetSmart, Giant Industries, Grossman Company Properties, Maricopa County Community College District and C.H. Guenther & Son.
Bernie first moved to the Valley in 1985 to join Johnson & Higgins of Arizona. During his twelve-year tenure at J&H, he was promoted from senior benefits consultant to officer, with responsibility for all of the company’s Employee Benefit Services operations in Phoenix. Under his leadership, the Phoenix office received national recognition for its outstanding performance in serving such major clients as Doubletree Hotels, Magma Copper Company, Tucson Newspapers, University Medical Center, Bryant Universal Roofing, The Phoenician Resort and Giant Industries.
Bernie’s first consulting positions were at Mutual of America’s St. Louis office, where he was responsible for new business development and support for more than 100 client companies in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. Based on his success, he was asked to open a field office in Denver, where his consulting clients included the United Way, Volunteers of America, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire USA, the Jewish Federation and other leading non-profit health and welfare organizations across the state.
A New York native, Bernie began his career at Mutual of America’s home office, where he developed an in-depth understanding of benefits program administration and management fundamentals that would serve him well throughout his subsequent consulting career. Bernie is a Fellow of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Specialists and a Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), a designation issued by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans in association with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. The CEBS designation indicates a high level of academic and professional achievement in the field of employee benefits and compensation. CEBS designees must successfully complete a series of rigorous national examinations and agree to abide by the organization’s high ethical standards and Principles of Conduct.
Bernie earned his BA at Georgetown University and his MBA in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.
